THE SETTING: A small, seaside business in Santa Barbara, California. The name of the business has been painted on the window. It reads, "Psych: Private Psychic Detective."

Inside, one Burton Guster -- who goes by the name Gus -- is adjusting the volume on the TV, moving from behind the desk to settle on an armchair.

"...Beautiful Santa Barbara, California, is the backdrop for this afternoon's coverage of the American Spelling Bee! Held at the..."

ENTER: Our protagonist and hero, Shawn Spencer!

"What are you watching?"

Gus quickly flips off the TV.

"Nothing."

"Dude, is--is that Korean porn? Come on, man!"

"It's the regional finals of the American... Spelling Bee," Gus admits.

Pause.

"What?"

"Don't mock me! It's a huge event!"

"No, I'm just... shocked you didn't take the whole day off," Shawn snickers.

After rolling his eyes he looks back up at Shawn. "This is a big deal Shawn, I watch it every year, I'm even taping it this year."

"Gus, no. It's not a big deal, except to these kids and their mothers," Shawn points out, stepping behind the desk to check on the mail.

(It's mostly for looks. He leaves the bill paying up to Gus, anyway.)

"I thought you were over the spelling bee thing."

"The Bee is a big deal, I was almost champion Shawn, I knew I shouldn't have listened to you. Now will you SHH so I can watch this in peace?"

Shock comes over his face as they announce the expected winner missed his word.

"Oh, come on, man! You can't still be mad about that," Shawn exclaims, tossing the mail back down on the desk and walking over to one of the other armchairs.

He flops across it unceremoniously.

"What was that, like the eighth grade?" he snickers.

"I was one word away from winning. That is the step to bigger things academically. Do you not realize you can get in to almost any college with this win? I knew better then to think you knew aggiornamento"
